a to do list

It was really useful to get together with an ESOL colleague to discuss using the class iPads and we were both reminded of how important collaboration is – not only to get ideas but mainly as a motivation to try new things with the technology.

From the meeting I came away with a short to do list:

1. review access to the iPads. There are several people using the iPads now and it’s important people know they can plan to use them so we need to ensure the system for this is working OK

2. Neither of us had ever asked the students to access the VLE on their own devices or on the class iPad. We thought having them accessing the VLE on the iPads initally may encourage them to think about accessing it on their own devices, so we set up a VLE link button on the Home Screen. We now need to think about how we can set up At Home tasks to encourage using the college VLE outside class.

3. Folders – as more and more apps were being added the Home Screen were becoming crowded. We reviewed how to make folders & we need to let people know that they can create folders at any time, but really one person needs to have an overview of all the devices to keep them ‘tidy’

4. Overcoming Tech issues: sometimes when the wifi doesn’t connect the first time if you use the ‘forget this network’ and then reconnect it then works. Students need support in getting onto the wifi initally.

Recommendations: ground rules, iPad skills & routines with students

Ground Rules

When you first introduce the iPads, or the use of any mobile technology,  to your students consider what ground rules you need to negotiate with students. Possible ground rules include:

  • don’t log into facebook or other social media apps on shared devices or ensure you remember to log out when finished.
  • don’t take photos of anyone in class without first asking permission
  • use mobiles for work purposes only in class
  • log out of wifi, close all apps and shut down the iPad at the end of class.

Recommendations to managers

  • Allow tutors the freedom to take risks in their classroom
  • Consider offering JPD as part of a wider CPD offer within the college.
  • Consider how to encourage tutors to take part in peer observation with colleagues both within and across departments.
  • Consider how undertaking collaborative action research responds to the new Professional Standards, for examples:

1.  Reflect on what works best in your teaching and learning to meet the diverse needs of learners

4.  Be creative and innovative in selecting and adapting strategies to help learners to learnprof_standards

6.  Build positive and collaborative relationships with colleagues and learners

10. Evaluate your practice with others and assess its impact on learning

15. Promote the benefits of technology and support learners in its use

20. Contribute to organisational development and quality improvement through collaboration with others

Recommendations: to tutors

Whatever your experience with using technology both in and outside of your teaching role, your own digital literacy skills or opinions on the role of technology in education we have to accept firstly, that students generally like using technology in the classroom and secondly that the notion of ‘technology’ is a moving beast – that technologies come and go.

With these key issues in mind I would recommend:

  1. Find a partner or small group of tutors who can experiment together with new technologies. Having a sounding board for ideas, inspiration and the sometimes needed little push is a really valuable aspect of professional development.
  2. Get a trusted colleague to come into your classroom for a peer observation. There is huge value in getting another perspective,  both in terms of reassuring you about what is working well and getting objective feedback to help figure out what you can do to improve it.
  3. Involve your students in your experimenting. Let them know that you are trying something new and why and that you need their help in figuring out if it works or not.

recommendations: set up & storage

Top Tips for setting up and storing a class set of iPads:

  1. You can have up to 10 iPads linked to a single iTunes account.
  2. Give each device a name (ours are creatively called ‘iPad 1′, ‘iPad 2′, etc.) Set a picture as a background that represents the name (again, our iPads creatively have images of numbers as their wallpaper)
  3. Turn on ‘automatic download’ on each device. When an app is added to one device, it will appear on them all (as long as they are online)
  4. Find a central, secure place to store and charge the iPads. We used a laptop trolley that has a padlock with a code. No lost keys to worry about.

Writing this it’s hard to remember exactly what a challenge it was to get the iPads into a usable condition, but this was certainly a learning curve. I have since set up another class set of iPads for another department in college and it probably took me about an hour.
