An update and some maths apps

GCSE – still not using the class iPads but we are having discussions about different apps and giving them the choice about whether they want to download them themselves. recommended apps Ss have used are:

photomaths - With this app you can take a photo of an equation (it can’t be words or handwriting)). The app then gives the answer and an explanation of the steps taken to solve it.

This app has been shared by various different people. Sean (a mahts tutor) told Dionne (a GCSE student and a LSA in college) who told the GCSE group about it.

GCSE maths geometry – This app has 14 different categorgies for geometry, with 10 quesitons on each. I like this because the feedback is good – once you have completed the quiz there is a clear expanation of the right answer. This app has been recommended to the GCSE group and I know of at least one student who has paid for the app and says she’s finding it useful.

I found this by ‘playing’. I put GCSE in the app store search, this app came up & I liked it enough to recoemmned it. I like apps that are easy to use and useful. I don’t want anything where the technology is too hard and gets in the way of practicing the maths.

Maths Entry 3 group

After a short break due to ill health and some other issues in class the iPads were brought back into class yesterday. There was an instant response from the group ‘oh great, iPads’. These are used at the end of class as a kind of ‘reward’ for hard work, but the students get all excited when they see them.

Unfortunetaly yesterday there were some problems with logging on. I had wanted the students to download app related to 2D and 3D shapes, but it didn’t happen, so they just used some of the apps already on the iPads.

I know there are apps to practice these skills, but  hadn’t done any specific research on apps as I still want the students to take a lead on this and take responsibility for choosing and evaluating the apps on the class set. It’s their maths app so it has to be up them to choose what apps they want to use.

English Entry 3 – Level 2

The iPads hadn’t been used for a while and were taken down this week and it was frustrating to find that the wifi wasn’t working so we couldn’t download any apps.

I had been doing some research on the JISC website. I had found an app I had wanted to use in the class.

dictionary.com – this is a recommended app on Jisc. I use this website already but didn’t know there was an app. I love this because it is more than a dictioanry.  You can check for synonyms, phrases, it gives you origins of words and if you don’t know how to spell a word you can use a voice search. I still need to explore further about how this function works so that I can introduce it to my students.

My plan had been to introduce the app and to get the students to explore and evaluate the app and how it could help them with the technical terminology in the exam.
