interviews: Teacher Education tutor

We started the discussion reviewing the tutor’s initial ideas in taking part in the project.

Her aims in taking part in the project were:

  • to allow students to explore iPads and available apps
  • to introduce BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) into sessions to allow for the opportunity to explore different devices as well as different apps

Student presentations on how they have included emerging technologies in their practice:

  • some trainees reviewed apps
  • a science trainee teacher reviewed a range of specialist biology apps she uses with her students.
  • an IT trainee teacher discussed a session he’d done on the history of devices focusing on a comparison between apple and android apps

BYOD and different devices and impact on students

The trainee teachers all had a variety of different devices, including tablets and smartphones and this reflects the diversity they will find in their own practice. The Teacher Education tutor feels it is her responsibility to raise awareness of this variety in order to give the trainee teachers confidence to explore the technology that is relevant for their subject area.

In class there was a lot of collaboration in class between the trainee on the similarities and differences between the devices and how these could be used.

For example, the students taught each other how to tether devices. The benefits of this was seen during an observation when a hair and beauty trainee teacher was teaching in a salon with no wifi. She tethered her own iPad to her own phone and used this in class. audio 10.40

Trainee teachers that teach in community settings typically have not had access to technology. By exploring mobile technologies it has allowed them see how they can embed collaborative learning through technology into their class, for example they can create a Padlet and have students contribute to it through the students own devices.

“If I’ve got this device, ….. I can tether it to my phone and I can use things like Padlet and things like Lino.it. It’s freed them up,, and just because I’m out in the community I can still use these things. It’s given them a lot more options than they had previously.”
